Technology is here to stay, and whilst some technology can impede our workout efforts making us more sedentary there are now apps that are motivating us to get off our butts, eat healthy and workout!

We’ve picked our favorite diet and workout apps for women to help you get fit, get healthy and lose weight.

1. RunKeeper

For a free app, RunKeeper has everything you need to track your workouts. With the GPS feature you can track your runs, bike rides and walks with this app. It will show you the route, distance, elevation and calorie burn and you can compare your current workout with previous workouts! Manually you can add your weight training, yoga and more with this great app. 

You can also add your friends to your account will help motivate you along, as they give you some love post workout! Not only that but now you can make goals to workout, and the app will give you a notification and act as your personal motivation tool! This app also syncs with tons other apps making it an invaluable tool for workouts.

2. Strava 

If you’re serious about running or cycling this is the app you need.  Whilst it’s great knowing you beat your PB for a 5k, it’s nice to see WHERE you are making up time along a course, and where you need to improve, and that’s where the free app called Strava is head and shoulders above the rest. Stretches of your run/bike are broken down not just into miles/km, but segments.

The segments will be stretches of the run you want to track, like a hill, flat, or particular street. Then you can compare those segments with your previous attempts and the attempts of other Strava users. You can earn PBs, virtual trophies and the ultimate grand prize, being crowned Queen of the Mountain!

3. Weight Watchers Mobile 

If you’re doing weight watchers diet program there is nothing worse than keeping track with pen and paper then being out for dinner and forgetting to log your points. Now you can keep track on your phone with the free Weight Watchers mobile app.

It tracks your daily and weekly points, track your activity (and earn points), while allowing you to take photos, scan foods and find weight watchers meetings in your area.

4. Fitocracy

Have you ever wanted fitness to just be more FUN? Well how about making fitness like a video game? Fitocracy is the app that tracks your workouts, earning you points. And just like in a video game, those points help you level up! There are quests, achievements, and a great social community in this app.

There are free workout routines, saved routines, and with a subscription the option to challenge other members to a workout duels! It’s basically a role playing game, but for Fitness. 6. Pocket WOD CrossFit trainer

As the saying goes there is a workout for everybody, well now there is an app for everybody, and for the CrossFit ladies, there is Pocket WOD. This free app has the CrossFit.com workout of the day (WOD) and so much more.

There is an extensive library of CrossFit workouts you can do, like Fran, Diane and Dirty 30, plus a timer feature, workout log, lifting log and lifting library. This is everything you need for CrossFit in one app!

7. Charity Miles

if you’re just a runner, maybe you’re not interested in your own workout data because you just like to get out and run and get “in the zone”. Well how about earning money for a charity while you run? No you don’t have to get sponsors for a race, this free app earns charities 10c a mile for bikers and 25c a mile for walkers and runners.

8. My Fitness Pal Calorie Counter Tracker

This free app is everything you need to keep your diet on track. It’s easy to use and has over 3 million foods in its food database with a barcode scanner feature to easily find foods. You can save and reuse meals, and your recipes to calculate the nutrition data and create custom foods.

Along with the diet tracker this app also allows you to track exercises with over 350 exercises including cardio and strength training. You can connect with friends too, which is a great motivational tool as members who diet with friends lose three times more weight on average!

9. Interval Timer 

If interval training is you’re thing then this free app is a MUST for your workouts.  Gone are the days of needing an extra device to time your workouts or clock watching, just program this app to your chosen workout intervals and GO! With this app you can customize your sets, high/low intervals and rest period.

It also plays your songs from your playlist, posts your workout to social media and you can save multiple workout templates to repeat chosen workout intervals. The great thing about this app is you can also change the sounds of each interval or choose vibrate. HIIT junkies will love this app!!!

If you’re new to fitness and want a basic app to help you start running, this app will take you from couch potato to running your first 5K in as little as eight weeks! Just working out three days per week, yep that’s all it takes to become a runner.
